A Tribe Called Tibet

A Yoga Journey on the Tibetan Plateau

May 22 - 30, 2020

Join founder of Souljourn Yoga, Jordan Ashley and Sweden based senior teacher Nikki Lee: a week of yin and yang, movement and meditation, serenity  and social change, and life altering adventure on the Tibetan Plateau.

Our retreat will start in Lanzhou, China and will continue as we journey through the province of Ganzu, arriving at our home for the week, Norden Camp

Surrounded by the majestic natural beauty of the Tibetan Plateau and immersed in profound culture,  Norden will takes us deep into the nomad experience with authentic Tibetan hospitality. A unique opportunity to fully enjoy the richness of the Tibetan Plateau, our 8 night/9 day journey will consist of Vinyasa and Kundalini practices, restorative yoga, sound baths, meditations + a mala making workshop. We will visit the Labrang Monastery, enjoy a guided hike, and embark on an incredible picnic adventure including a horseback ride to a secret location on the plateau.

Expect moments in between the journey for soaking up the sauna, spa, cocktails and cuisines and will end with a transformative day with the girls of  Educating Girls of Rural China , a nonprofit dedicated to providing high school and university education to impoverished young women from rural regions of Western China.

National Geographic named Norden Camp one of the best eco-lodges in the world. Travel + Leisure called it one of the best new hotels on the planet.

Day 2: Adventure to Norden Camp

Rise and shine with an early breakfast before we head off (4-5 hour drive)  to the plateau and Norden Camp which will be our home for the next 6 nights. Enjoy a traditional Tibetan welcome lunch, settle into camp, and begin to drop in to our adventure. We will reconvene for an opening circle and evening practice before our first feast underneath the clear and starry night.

Day 3: Explore + Restore

Wake up with a morning tea/coffee, followed by heating vinyasa practice. Today is your day to explore the camp and take advantage of spa services. We will meet up for lunch, a restorative class, before sipping delicious cocktails in the lounge and feasting together an amazing traditional Tibetan dinner.

Day 4: Hike + Sound Bath

Start the day with a Vinyasa flow and stretch before getting ready for our epic hike! After breakfast, we will head out for day hike to see the monastery from a fresh perspective. The size and majesty of Labrang Monastery can only be fully appreciated from a bird’s eye view. For our guests not intimidated by a little exercise, a hike along the hillside surrounding the monastery is an ideal way to appreciate the scale of Tibet’s largest functioning monastery. Norden will prepare a hearty picnic lunch, where can enjoy overlooking a stunning view of Labrang’s two eras, the monastery and modern town. We will head back to Norden Camp to relax and unwind before a yin yoga session and sound bath guided by Nikki.

Day 5: Making + Moving

We will meet up in the yoga shala for our Mala Making workshop (guided by Nikki) who will assist us in this making meditation before our yoga practice and dinner together.

Night at Norden Camp

Day 6: Labrang Monastery Visit

Start the morning with a more intensive Kundalini practice. We will then visit the local monastery to learn about Tibetan Buddhism and monastic life. Today, Labrang Monastery ($་ ང་བ ་ཤིས་འ ིལ) is the largest and most vibrant of monasteries left on the Tibetan Plateau with over 1,000 monks, 18 halls and hundreds of monks’ residences. The Monastery’s monk guides will lead visitors through the daily routine of their counterparts with visits to great Prayer Hall, Medicinal College, and Butter Sculpture Museum. After touring these saffron, salmon and earth washed stone edifices, Norden’s guides will continue the journey on a private tour not available to the public, visiting the three-story Barkhang, Labrang’s traditional printing press with its impressive 20,000 wood blocks, the Golden Stupa, Tantric College, and the Nunnery.  After a relaxing lunch at the nearby Norden Café,  the tour continues with visits to Norlha’s Boutique Shop, Norlha’s Tibetan Carpet Weaving Workshop, and a Master Thangka Painter.

We will return to Norden Camp to unwind, finishing the evening with a chilled out yoga session and dinner. Night at Norden Camp

Day 7: Plateau Picnic

It's our last full day at Norden Camp, so what better way to celebrate our experience together then with an epic picnic on the plateau? After yoga and breakfast, we will have a horse- riding excursion to our secret picnic location (45-minute to 1-hour). Upon arrival, you will be able to relax and enjoy our Norden Camp 3-course picnic menu, made uniquely from locally-sourced ingredients; whilst admiring one of the most unique views of the Tibetan Plateau. Upon departure, our Norden Camp vintage and open-top Jeep will pick you up from the picnic location and drive you back to the camp, allowing you to discover yet another path amongst the rolling mountains of the Plateau. We will return back to camp for our final yoga session and bonfire.
