On the Ground
Yoga & Arts Camp
BODY | MIND | HEART
On the Ground is a five-day yoga and arts camp for teen girls from South LA (Watts and Compton), created in collaboration between Souljourn Yoga Foundation and Project Blue. It is trauma-informed, free to every participant, and built on one premise. Rest isn't a reward. It's a right.
The week is organized around three ideas: Body, Mind, and Heart. Girls move each morning and gather in a circle each evening, and in between they learn what yoga actually is, how the breath steadies the nervous system, and how to name a feeling before it names you. Afternoons open the week outward through poetry, creative expression, body awareness, and the work of imagining a future self. A team of Los Angeles practitioners leads these sessions, women working across therapy, somatics, herbalism, poetry, and coaching, so the girls meet a different discipline and a different woman each day, and see up close what it looks like to build a life around your own practice.
Nothing is rushed and nothing is required. Girls are invited to share and equally free not to. The space works because it stays theirs.
What they carry out is meant to last longer than the week. Each girl keeps a workbook of her own reflections, a vision board, a letter to her future self, and a set of practices she can use anywhere, on a hard morning or before a hard conversation. Ongoing mentorship and virtual check-ins follow camp, so the five days are a beginning rather than a one-off.
The next camp comes to LA in winter 2027. Camp is free to every girl who attends. To support the program, make a donation and write "Yoga Camp" in the notes so your contribution is directed here.
Past Yoga Camp Programs
We ran the first On the Ground camp in July 2026 with 10 girls from South LA. They arrived nervous. By Friday you could feel the shift in the room.
"It felt so empowering hearing everyone's perspectives, how they felt, their stories. Just getting to know everyone was so beautiful. It's something I will cherish forever." Camp participant, 2026
"If this camp had never happened, I would have missed out on great mindfulness and sound techniques, and on a supportive space of young women who are dedicated to moving their bodies and loving themselves."
